A typewriter with the words "stories matter" written on the paper.

Any time my mom comes to town to visit me, I consider it my daughterly duty to take her to the hottest and buzziest brunch spot in the city. I do this for obvious reasons like wanting a good meal and culinary exploration, but I also do it for more subtle reasons too, like wanting my mom to think I’m an authority on all things tasteworthy. My research for finding this particular spot always starts the same: I rush to Google with a vague search about restaurants in my area, then it's off to the races! I absorb and gather everything I think I need to know – directions to the restaurant, their hours, parking, and of course a quick glance at the menu to make sure it's in line with my mother’s very particular taste. As you can imagine, I come away with a lot to consider.

But despite the array of perfectly acceptable options, I can’t help but think of all the restaurants I didn’t explore. The ones that sounded great by name and a few identifying pictures but failed to grasp my attention from their less than stellar websites. Vague descriptions, sketchy graphics, and broken backlinks are just a few of the issues that keep me from discovering my next hidden gem for brunch. Why do so many businesses fail to reach their audiences? It’s certainly not for a lack of trying. But still, the link between problem solving products and desperately seeking customers seems to fall just short.

That’s because at the end of the day, your ability to reach the people most likely to engage with your brand and buy what you’re selling comes down to one thing: messaging. Finding the right words can be tricky work, which is why so many companies and firms today choose to outsource this vital piece of the business to marketing consultants and copywriters. They lean on these experts to help elevate their brands and speak to target audiences in the language that they best understand. If your marketing and content is struggling to turn heads and keep people engaged, it may be time to consider hiring a copywriter!

Wait, what exactly is a Copywriter?

Maybe you’ve heard the title thrown around from time to time during marketing meetings or stumbled on a pitch in your inbox from one, but you don’t know exactly what they do or how they fit into your business plans. Essentially, a copywriter is a salesman that is good with words.

Copywriters are trained professionals who know how to take the most important elements of your brand and present it to audiences in a way that they can relate to. It’s not enough to simply tell readers what it is that you offer, you must answer the question: what’s in it for me? Through a delicate mix of target market research, behavioral psychology, and writing savvy, a copywriter can help answer this important question, turning prospects into clients and consideration into sales.

In this post, we will cover just some of the ways a copywriter can assist your business goals and separate your brand from your competitors.

Reason #1: They Free Up Your Time

How many times have you come across a standout marketing campaign and thought to yourself “I have to try this for my own business!”? And how many times have you followed through with making your own version actually come to life? Don’t be ashamed of your answers, marketing is a lot of work!

There’s a reason it is its own department in large companies and organizations. From research and analyzing, finding concepts and writing, not to mention staying up to date on the latest trends, working on your company’s branding can start to feel like it's taking over your life.

Outsourcing these duties to a copywriter can not only free you up to work on other important projects, but give you the confidence that your content is being handled with the utmost care and consideration for how you want your business presented to the world. With their skills and expertise, copywriters can find what makes your business unique and write your brand story in a way that makes you stand out in your industry. After all, the first step to building your clientele is to make them notice you.

Reason #2: They Are Word-Savvy Brand Ambassadors

A freelance copywriter may not be on your regular payroll, but that doesn’t mean they don’t function similarly to full-time employees. When you hire a copywriter to write for you, they make it a priority to learn your business inside and out. They absorb past marketing campaigns, study your website, learn about your customers, analyze your competitors, and so much more!

Armed with a deep knowledge of what makes you stand out, copywriters can take the most passionate components of your brand and make them undeniable to customers. Using relevant and eye-catching words, they can influence and encourage (ethically of course) your target audience to consider your services and make your brand a part of their everyday lives. Just think of copywriters as your personal cheer squad, here to champion your business and spell a few things out for the crowd.

Reason #3: Copywriters Are Strategy Partners

Creativity may be hard to find at times but ideas are everywhere. Unfortunately, not every idea that pops into our heads is a great one (like my 7th grade bangs – yikes!), which is why it can always be helpful to have someone to bounce ideas off of. When you partner with a copywriter, you get much more than just someone to generate words and copy – you get a strategy partner that can help elevate your marketing to a whole new level!

Copywriters can help brainstorm ideas, recommend projects, provide new and creative angles to your existing ideas, and smooth out the edges of your content. Together, you and a copywriter can work together to make eye-catching content that’s engaging while staying in line  with your business goals and mission. With another person on board to be a second pair of eyes, not only can you generate new and exciting ideas for your marketing but you can also assure that your target audience is getting exactly what they expect from your brand.

Reason #4: Better Messaging = More Customers = More $$$

It’s safe to say that most business owners want to make a lot of money. Maybe not Oprah money, but they certainly want to scale up and grow to reach as many potential shoppers and buyers as possible. Choosing to partner with a copywriter can help accelerate this goal so you can grow faster while still staying true to the brand voice you want your business to present.

As mentioned earlier, focused messaging is the winning strategy for reaching more customers and earning their attention. With thoughtful and well executed content, your audience can begin to resonate with your company’s purpose and before you realize it, (and before they do as well) they’re striving to make your brand a staple in their day-to-day life. And once they’re determined to shop with you, you can earn more conversions, gain loyal customers, and start generating more sales. It’s a win-win…as in windfall that is!

Getting marketing support can be a long and difficult decision but one that ultimately sets your business on a path to success. It’s important to meet your customers where they are and to tailor your words around their needs and wants to make them feel seen and understood. Overcoming their objections can be the first step to building trust and making them invested in your brand. The stronger your messaging, the greater your chances of finding customers who eventually become dedicated and loyal audiences.

As you gear up for your next product launch or just want to reconsider your messaging and branding, ask yourself if you could benefit from hiring a writer and gaining some valuable time back on your plate. Who knows? Maybe the next time I’m deep-sea Google searching for a new brunch spot, I’ll come across your business with a unique and standout message that tells me I’m exactly where I need to be.
